With all the talk about Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka over the past few days, you may have missed a bit of speculation linking former Spinners skipper Luis Alicea to the big club’s First Base Coach opening. Nick Cafardo reports:
“…Epstein also said he’s looking for an infield specialist to coach first base. He hopes to have an internal choice, and it could be former Sox infielder Luis Alicea.”
Alicea managed the Spinners to their best ever record in his second season at the helm in 2005. He spent 2006 with the Greenville Drive and is spending this fall as manager in the Arizona Fall League.

If you don’t subscribe to Baseball America, let me fill you in on a little secret.
The publication just named the Boston Red Sox draft as the best in the league in 2006. According to an article on redsox.com,
“One year after rating the team’s 2005 draft as the second-best in the game, Baseball America on Tuesday declared Boston’s 2006 First-Year Player Draft as tops am
ong the 30 Major League teams. The 2006 Draft Report Cards are included in the latest issue of Baseball America.”
The article continues, citing Spinners ‘06 reliever Joshua Papelbon as “one of the top five second-day picks” in the 2006 Draft. Papelbon was a steal for the Red Sox. He was fifth in the league in saves and finished the season with an ERA under 2.00. He was one of Lowell’s best pitchers.
