Former Spinners pitch Red Sox to victory, Smith earns first major league victory

All nine innings of last night’s Red Sox game were pitched by former Spinners as Boston defeated Arizona 5-4. Justin Masterson, a 2006 alumni, started for Boston and went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Chris Smith, who pitched in Lowell in 2002, relieved Masterson in the seventh and pitched two innings of hitless relief. Smith, who was making just his second major league appearance, got the victory, his first as a major-leaguer. Jonathan Papelbon, a 2003 Spinner, pitched the ninth to notch his 94th career save.
