Kyle Weiland’s record-setting run of not allowing an earned run earned the Spinners ace the Red Sox’ Organization Pitcher of the Month Award. Weiland made five starts in August and did not allow an earned run in 22 innings of work. He only gave up 11 hits and four walks while striking out 26 batters.
Also earning awards were Spinners catcher Tim Federowicz and Outfielder Wilfredo Pichardo. Federowicz was named the Defensive Player of the Month for his stellar play behind the plate. The North Carolina product has thrown out 41% of the 39 runners attempting to steal this year and committed just two errors.
Pichardo, a speedy outfielder from the Dominican Republic, won the Base Stealer of the Month award. He played just three games in with Lowell before injuring his knee when he landed awkwardly on first base trying to beat out an infield single. However, before joining the Spinners he racked up 42 stolen bases in 52 games with the Red Sox’ Gulf Coast League team, and was caught stealing just nine times. He was one for two in stolen base attempts with the Spinners.
The 2007 Spinners’ shortstop, Yamaico Navarro, was the organization’s Player of the Month after hitting .385 to lead the Lancaster Jethawks to the California League playoffs. Kris Negron, a member of the 2006 Spinners, was the Baserunner of the Month.
