2015 Baseball at Edward A. LeLacheur Park began Thursday night with a 6 inning exhibition game featuring the Lowell Spinners and the visiting Nashua Silver Knights of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. The fun-filled evening featured a 6-5 win and some interesting between innings entertainment.
Prior to the game, the 2015 Spinners took the field with some special guests. The players were joined by the Harrington Elementary Baseball Buddies sponsored by Lowell Dentistry for Children. They remained on the field for the national anthem, which was performed by the Lynnfield Middle School Pioneer Singers.
It may just have been an exhibition game, but the college players of Nashua came out to show that they could hang with Lowell’s pros and jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Spinners couldn’t figure out Nashua’s starting pitcher, Brandon Walsh, but when the Silver Knights went to the bullpen to start the fourth, Lowell’s bats got going and they scored two quick runs. Entering the bottom of the sixth and final inning down 5-2, it looked like the boys from Lowell would fall short in their first game under the lights of LeLacheur. But that’s when the Spinners bats exploded. They came roaring back and scored four runs to win in a walk-off (6-5) and sent Spinners fans home happy.
Throughout the game, there were exciting competitions on the field involving the fans and some of our Minion friends.
Following the top of the second inning, Minions Kevin and Dave entertained the park with a race down the third base line. It was off to a rough start with Kevin taking a sharp left turn into the outfield and Dave catching a little field-fright and staying in his starting spot. But they gathered their little minion minds and finished the race at a close finish with a victory for Kevin.
Considering Honey Dew Donuts is one of our sponsors, a donut eating contest seemed necessary. Following the conclusion of the second inning, four hungry participants from Lynnfield Middle School kneeled on the field and raced to finish their donut first without using their hands! One of the contests gave up on this rule, though, and shoved the entire donut into her mouth, bringing the race to an end!
Following the top of the sixth inning, one of our youngest Spinners’ fans dominated Big Hero Six Trivia brought to the park thanks to Chunky’s. He really knew his stuff and only needed a little help from the fans!
