Spinners Falter Early to Black Bears on Military Jersey Giveaway Night

On a night where Veterans of the Armed Service were honored, the Spinners fell to the West Virginia Black Bears 12-3.

The Spinners got off to an early lead in the first inning with Luis Alexander Basabe stealing two bases and scoring through Andrew Benintendi’s RBI. Benintendi was the 7th overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft.

Jose Almonte (2-1) started on the mound for the Spinners, but came out of the game in the second inning after giving up five runs and myriad of walks. He was relieved by Enfember Martinez.

The Black Bears went on an offensive tear and capitalized on three Spinner errors by scoring seven runs in the second inning off Almonte and Martinez.

The Spinners tried rallying in the seventh inning with Josh Ockimey leading off with a single. Tucker Tubbs followed with a double, and Mitch Gunsolus singled them both home to cut the deficit to seven. The rally was not enough, as the Black Bears scored two more runs in the ninth inning when the rain started coming down heavy at LeLacheur Park.

With the series tied at one game apiece, the Spinners look to take the series finale against the Black Bears Friday night on “#LikeAGirl Night” with Post-Game Fireworks.

Dioscar Romero (1-1, 5.59) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.

The Spinners organization honored Military Veterans on Thursday night with a replica military jersey giveaway. Veterans were also honored during the Lahey Health Pre-Game Parade, and later given accolades during the third inning.

Scooby Doo made his usual appearance in the Mystery Machine along with mascots Mario and Luigi. The pair later did their usual Mario-Kart race, and Luigi took the victory by speeding past Mario, who slipped on a banana.

The sumo wrestlers excited the crowd through their usual smack-down. The Blue Bomber made a later appearance when the Canaligator raced a young fan in “Race the Gator.”

He snuck up on the Canaligator and slammed him to the ground as the fan beat the Canaligator in the closely contested race.
