Basabe Blasts 2 Home Runs to Beat Black Bears 4-1

Luis Alexander Basabe’s second home run of the night

The Spinners headed into Wednesday’s game atop the Stedler division and looked to take the first game of a three game series against the West Virginia Black Bears.

Jake Cosart started the game for the Spinners, giving a strong performance. Cosart went five hitless and scoreless innings, before being taken out due to a high pitch count. He would go on to get the win.

The story of the night however, was Spinners right fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. He carried the Spinners to the 4-1 victory. Basabe went 2-4, with a solo shot in the third inning and drove in two runs with a three run home run in the fifth inning, his 4th of the season. Basabe is also the first Spinner in franchise history to hit home runs from both sides of the plate. He accomplished this feat against Vermont on June 30th and did it again last night. Not only was Basabe impressive at the plate, but he made a spectacular catch as well, keeping the hits at 0 while Cosart still had a no hitter going.

The Spinners also had strong contributions from pitchers Ben Taylor (five strikeouts and one earned run) and Bobby Poyner (no runs allowed and the save).

The night’s promotions were top notch as well. The first 1,000 fans to attend the game received free rally towels.  In the middle of the second inning on the third base side, two first year season ticket holders took the field for Dizzy Derby, sponsored by Amerident Dental. After spinning around, both fans fell before getting on their blow up horses. Both fans made it to the finish line after falling down a few times. Our winner went home with a great prize.

At the conclusion of the 8th inning, Minion Wipe Out took place on the first base side by the Spinners dugout. Our two minions, Kevin and Dave, had quite the obstacle course to run through. Their first task was running through cones, which Kevin and Dave had no problem with. It got tricky when they had to walk across balance beams. It was even harder to keep their balance when Spinners players threw water balloons at them from the dugout. After falling a few times, the minions next had to get past two Spinterns holding giant boxing gloves. This was too much for Kevin, who fell just before the finish line. Dave fell on top of Kevin but was able to just make it past the finish line and take the victory.

The Spinners and Black Bears meet again Thursday night at 7:05 P.M. for Military Appreciation Night presented by US Family Health Plan.
